National Freedom Day

2010 February 1
by Joshua Hostetter

Today is National Freedom Day.  National Freedom Day celebrates freedom from slavery, and recognizes that America is a symbol of freedom.

National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to remind us that America stands for, and is a symbol of freedom for all people. The roots of this special day come directly from the end of slavery and the signing of the 13th amendment outlawing slavery.

It is suggested that you “Celebrate this day by reflecting upon your own freedoms that you enjoy by being fortunate enough to be in America. Millions of people in the world are not free.”   However, do so at your own peril.  Considering your own freedoms and the state of America today may be hazardous to any skewed worldview that glorifies the United States.  That said, I am proud to be an American and have the right to question.

Freedom Haters Beware!

That ad (above) reminds me of a David Cross bit where, referring to George W. Bush’s mantra that ‘The terrorists hate our freedom, David Cross replies, “Seriously, if the terrorists hated freedom, then the Netherlands would be fucking dust!”  And then there is his delivery of the oft-repeated “we’re freedom lovers. They’re freedom haters” nonsense.  And now for some history…

The Origin of National Freedom Day:

Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created National Freedom Day. He believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. So, February 1st was chosen to celebrate National Freedom Day.  On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a the bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day.

Holiday! Wait… answering machines?

Today and every January 30th is set aside as National Inane Answering Message Day. Yay!  Wait… what?  National Inane Answering Machine Day?  What the heck does that mean?  How does one celebrate this obviously legitimate holiday?

Annually, the day set aside to change, shorten, replace or delete those ridiculous and/or annoying answering machine messages that waste the time of anyone who must listen to them. O!  That certainly explains it… kinda.

The holiday was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat.com fame and they received a copyright for the holiday.  So on this day, National Inane Answering Message Day, take the time to change your senseless and annoying answering machine/voicemail message.

It's a snake!

Disclaimer: if you are dense enough to follow my advice and “get a’snake-wranglin”, you deserve the bite that you receive.
